You Tawlkin’ To Me?

Documentary filmmaker Heather Quinlan is working on a new film studying the infamous New York Accent.  ”If These Knishes Could Talk” charts the inevitable decline of the accent as New York becomes more diverse.  Visit Heather’s IndieGoGo fundraiser page if you want to donate some cash to help her finish her film.  I love New Yawk.

Finding A Lost Art Form: The Making Of “Snow White”

Go back to a simpler time with this official Disney doc about the making of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”…a time when writers sat at typewriters with huge cigars hanging out of their mouths, and when hundreds of “pretty girls, in a building all their own, well-lighted and air-conditioned throughout”, colored each individual frame of the film.

And keep your eyes peeled at the 6:00 mins mark for the Mickey and Minnie characters at the film’s premiere…SCARY!

Kim Jong-il: Dictator, Dear Leader, Movie Mogul?

For nearly 60 years, Pyongyang’s mysterious University of Cinematic and Dramatic Arts has been training young actors to work in the regime’s propaganda film industry.  It took the team behind this doc two years to negotiate with the North Korean government to earn the right to be the first foreign crew to film at this enigmatic school.  If you’ve got time to dig into this 25-min video, I highly recommend it:

What The Future Sounded Like

The birth of electronic music can be traced back to the EMS (Electronic Music Studios), a group of forward-thinking musicians in England who experimented with sounds and techniques to create a completely new genre. “What the Future Sounded Like” is an excellent documentary that profiles this group and the stunning achievements they made. If you’re a geek like me, you’ll love seeing all the vintage computers and mixing equipment that probably seemed incredibly futuristic at the time.

It’s fascinating how most of this music is so timeless and can still hold up today, decades later -

Meet Fashion Man, The Dapper Spinner Of Chicago

Vincent Falk, aka “Fashion Man”, likes wearing brightly colored neon suits and spinning around in a circles.  Around and around and around and around…so much so that he’s become a quasi-celebrity in Chicago and the subject of a new documentary taking the festival circuit by storm.   Just who is this distinguished gentlemen?  Where does he come from?  Where does he get his suits?  And most importantly, what’s the deal with all the twirling?

The channel 5 local news team loves him so much that they feature him regularly on their newscasts.  Have a look at him in action:
