Theme Restaurants…Extreme Edition
I’m a sucker for chain and theme restaurants…I’ll admit it. Nothing gets me more excited.
My favorite theme restaurant of all time is Ed Debevic’s in Chicago.
It’s a 50′s/60′s themed diner – complete with classic music, vintage memorabilia, and most memorably, the rudest waitstaff you’ll ever encounter. I had my 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th birthday party at the restaurant, and I remember being petrified of the staff. They took their characters to a new extreme – shouting, ridiculing orders (“DIET coke?!? You pathetic piece of s**t!”), and releasing their aggression on the most unsuspecting customers (including young, impressionable children, like me…) I know it sounds like a nightmare, but it was a blast.
Weburbanist has compiled a list of some of the wildest theme restaurants from around the world. My favorite is Belgium’s “Dinner in the Sky”. They strap diners into chairs and raise them and the entire dinner table 150 feet above the ground! There isn’t a single meal that goes by that I don’t drop a utensil on the floor, so I’m not sure it would be safe to have me around, but it seems like a wild experience. Click the image to see the rest of the restaurants, including dinner in a fake hospital, a fake airplane, and a fake prison…
